The Super Lawyers Selection Process
Every year, Super Lawyers establishes a list of attorneys who demonstrate outstanding professionalism to help potential clients who are searching for legal representation.
Before an attorney is named to the list, they must pass through the following rigorous process:
- Nomination: An attorney must be nominated by peers who have seen them in action. In-firm colleagues can submit potential candidates for consideration, but the points assessed for such nominations are lower than those for out-firm nominations. Super Lawyers has systems in place to prevent any quid pro quo nominations. Additionally, attorneys cannot add their own names to the candidate pool, nor can they campaign for nominations. These safeguards ensure that the entire process is fair. The organization also conducts its own research and accept unofficial nominations to identify candidates for the award.
- Independent Research: After Super Lawyers has compiled a candidate pool, its research team examines and evaluates each attorney in 12 different areas. These factors indicate professionalism and peer recognition and include, but are not limited to, experience, honors/awards, and education/employment background. Each indicator has a point value, and some factors are worth more than others.
- Peer Review: The scores from the first two steps are tallied, and the lawyers with the highest rankings are invited to participate in a blue ribbon review. The panel members evaluate other attorneys within their practice area on a 5-point scale.
- Final Selection: After the blue ribbon review panel attorneys complete their ratings, Super Lawyers totals the scores from the previous 4 steps. The attorneys who scored the highest throughout the process are then chosen for inclusion on the Super Lawyers list. The organization conducts one last check on all selectees to ensure they meet eligibility requirements.
